On Monday night, while TV news networks were busy dissecting the assembly exit polls, oil companies announced a rise in petrol prices by 83 paise per litre and diesel rates by Rs 1.26 per litre.

The Indian Oil Corporation said the change was affected in Delhi from midnight on May 16. Other states and union territories, will face a corresponding rise, inclusive of local levies, it said.

“The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and INR-US dollar exchange rate warrant increase in prices, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision,” the Indian Oil Corporation said in a press release.

From Tuesday, a litre of petrol will cost Rs 63.02 in Delhi, Rs 66.44 in Kolkata, Rs 66.12 in Mumbai and Rs 62.47 in Chennai. The price of a litre of diesel will be Rs 51.67 in Delhi, Rs 54.10 in Kolkata, Rs 56.81 in Mumbai and Rs 53.09 in Chennai, PTI reported.

In the last hike on May 1, petrol price went up by Rs 1.06 a litre and diesel rate by Rs 2.94.

From jibes at the two-year anniversary of the Narendra Modi government to demands for cheaper travel, Twitter didn't take too kindly to the price rise.
