The tabloid Mumbai Mirror's crass sensationalism and lack of judgement prompted anger and outrage on social media
The daily took a direct quote by athlete Lakshmi Gopichand about her husband Pullela Gopichand’s expertise as a coach:
"Sindhu has what I did not have back then – my husband as coach."
But it conveniently left out two essential words – "as coach" – in the headline.
PV Sindhu recently created history at Rio by becoming the first Indian woman to win a silver medal at the Olympics in Badminton.
Lakshmi Gopichand is a former national Badminton player who represented India in the Atlanta Olympics, 1996. She also helps her husband run the academy out of Hyderabad which also produced Olympic medal winner, Saina Nehwal, who bagged the bronze at the London Games, 2012.
Social media did not take too kindly to the trivialising of a direct quote by taking it out of context and has since then been calling the newspaper out on its inaccurate representation.
From jokes to anger, Twitter and Facebook users decided to educate the tabloid in the nitty-gritty of journalism.
Mumbai Mirror. What a dreadful headline. You really should be ashamed. Everything doesn't need a click bait headline pic.twitter.com/QWs2RZDrkW
