STUMPS ON DAY 1
India finish the day at 21/0 (13 overs). A near perfect day for the visitors as their openers survive the last hour and remain unbeaten after England were bowled out for 183. Rohit is not out on 9 off 40 and Rahul on 9 off 39.
IND 21/0 after 12.2 overs: Rohit survives an LBW shout and England lose a review. Robinson went wide of the crease struck the right-hander in front but the ball was missing leg by some distance.
IND 21/0 after 12 overs: Left-arm pacer Sam Curran comes on to bowl and beats Rahul’s outside edge twice. The runs have dried up but that doesn’t matter for India at the moment.
IND 19/0 after 9 overs: Maiden over from Robinson. The right-arm pacer is getting steep bounce. He hits Rohit on the pad and goes up in appeal but the umpire says not out. The ball seemed to be going over.
IND 19/0 after 8 overs: Another quiet over from Broad, just two runs from it. We are about 20 minutes away from stumps. It’ll be huge for India if their openers can remain unbeaten.
IND 17/0 after 7 overs: Ollie Robinson comes into the attack and bowls a maiden first up. Rahul attempts a square-cut off one but is beaten.
IND 17/0 after 6 overs: Four! This time Broad over-pitches and Rohit leans forward for the drive past point. Valuable runs against the new ball for India.
IND 13/0 after 5 overs: Shot! Anderson pitches it slightly full and Rahul plays a glorious drive through cover for four. The Indian openers have done well so far.
IND 8/0 after 4 overs: Good over from Broad, kept his length just outside off. Rahul doing well to stay low and keep his bat out of the way.

IND 7/0 after 2 overs: Rahul picks up three with a push past point. That will make him feel a lot better. Broad with the new ball from this end.
IND 4/0 after 1 over: Rohit gets the Indian innings going with a thick outside edge for four. Anderson hitting his mark right away and shaping the ball away from the right-hander.
10.04 pm: The Indian openers are out in the middle. This is going to be a challenging hour for the visitors. Big job on Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul’s hands.
ENGLAND ALL-OUT FOR 183
Jasprit Bumrah gets his fourth wicket as James Anderson is clean bowled. The last wicket added 23 runs for England. Sam Curran remains unbeaten on 27 off 37.
ENG 183/9 after 65 overs: Well, another good over for England. This partnership is now worth 23 runs. Anderson defends four balls from Shami before picking a single. Curran then slams the last ball over point for four.
ENG 178/9 after 64 overs: Four! Curran hits the last ball of that Bumrah over through extra-cover for a boundary. But that means Anderson will finally be on strike at the start of an over. India wouldn’t mind that. Shami is replacing Thakur in the attack.
ENG 174/9 after 63 overs: Eventful over from Thakur. Curran smacks one over the mid-wicket region for four before getting an outside edge that falls just short of third man. These are valuable runs for England.
ENG 167/9 after 61 overs: SIX! The first maximum of the match and it comes from Sam Curran’s bat. Shardul Thakur bowls it short and the left-hander muscles it over the long-on fence. He’s more than capable of spoiling India’s party here. He’s done it before.
ENG 160/9 after 60 overs: WICKET! Broad didn’t last too long, he’s out LBW for 4. Bumrah has his third, he’s bowling from around the wicket and shaping the ball away from the left-handers masterfully. Anderson is the last man in.
ENG 155/8 after 58.4 overs: WICKET! Ollie Robinson becomes the fourth England batsman to get dismissed for a duck. The right-hander attempted a half-hearted pull and the ball looped straight to mid-on. Shardul Thakur has two wickets in the over.
ENG 155/7 after 58.1 overs: WICKET! Shardul Thakur returns to the attack and gets the big wicket of Joe Root off the first ball. The England captain is trapped LBW and has to walk back for 64 off 108. India are all over England at the moment. Ollie Robinson is the new batsman.
ENG 155/6 after 58 overs: Sensational over from Bumrah! He comes around the wicket to Sam Curran and troubles the left-hander with superb away-swingers. High class bowling from a high class bowler.
ENG 151/6 after 57 overs: Shot! Siraj bangs it in and Root plays a superb pull in the gap for four. This has been such an impressive knock from the England captain. But he still has a lot to do for his team.
ENG 145/6 after 55.5 overs: WICKET! India’s pacers have been phenomenal after the tea interval. This time Jasprit Bumrah gets the outside edge and Jos Buttler is out for an 18-ball duck.
ENG 143/5 after 54 overs: Maiden over by Bumrah. He beats Buttler’s inside edge with a superb yorker. The right-hander has played 11 balls and is yet to get off the mark.
ENG 143/5 after 53 overs: Shot! Shami pitches it full and Root plays another gorgeous drive past the extra-cover region for four.
ENG 138/5 after 51 overs: WICKET! Just the start India were looking for post tea. Lawrence gets an edge down leg and Shami has his third.
8.31 pm: The players are out on the field for the final session. England have Joe Root and Dan Lawrence at the crease now. India would want to get into the tail quickly. Here we go!
End of 2nd session
ENG 138/4 after 50.2 overs: WICKET! Perfect end to the second session for India as Bairstow (29 off 71) is out LBW. Shami had struck soon after lunch and he gets another one just before tea. Good review by Kohli again.
50 for Joe Root! The England captain started his innings with 3 quick boundaries and has looked solid since. England are slowly gaining the upper hand with the 4th-wicket partnership between Root and Jonny Bairstow.
ENG 131/3 after 48 overs: Bumrah unlucky! He troubled Root through the over by going wide of the crease and bringing the ball back in sharply. The last ball took the inside edge and went for four.
ENG 127/3 after 47 overs: Two classy drives from Bairstow and two fours for him. Kohli encourages Siraj to stick to his plan. Bairstow is looking increasingly comfortable at the crease after starting his innings a bit tentatively.
ENG 116/3 after 46 overs: Root and Bairstow bring up their 50-run partnership in 112 balls. Bumrah returns to the attack and bowls a quiet over. India need a wicket soon.
ENG 110/3 after 43 overs: Siraj replaces Jadeja in the attack and concedes three runs in his ninth over. This partnership is starting to look good for England.
ENG 107/3 after 42 overs: An absolute peach of a delivery from Thakur to square Root up. Unlucky to not get the edge. But the England captain then picks up another four with a drive through covers. Root is now batting on 41 off 67.
ENG 101/3 after 41 overs: Shot! This time Jadeja drops it short and Bairstow cuts it hard past backward point for a boundary.
ENG 97/3 after 40 overs: Shot! Nicely done by Root. Thakur got the ball to shape away and the right-hander opened the face of his bat to guide it past gully for four.
ENG 93/3 after 38.4 overs: Bairstow survive a run-out! The thrown goes to the wrong end and that gives him time to scramble back. Root with a glorious drive for four before that. Two no-balls from Jadeja already in his spell.
ENG 84/3 after 37 overs: The run of maiden overs ends as Jadeja oversteps. But just one run comes from the left-arm spinner’s first over. Some turn for him already.
India introduce spin finally as Ravindra Jadeja comes on to bowl. Being the lone spinner in the team, Jadeja has a big job on his hands.
ENG 83/3 after 36 overs: That was close! Thakur returns to the attack and shapes it away from Root, the England captain goes for the drive and the edge falls inches short of gully. Another maiden over.
ENG 83/3 after 35 overs: Now Siraj goes wide of the crease to bring the ball back into Bairstow. Still no forward short-leg in place, though. Maiden over that.
ENG 83/3 after 34 overs: Shami is putting Bairstow in all sorts of trouble. The ball is nipping back in sharply and the right-hander isn’t being allowed to come on the front foot. India building pressure again.
ENG 78/3 after 32 overs: Shami has figures of 1/14 from 11 overs. He gets a ball to nip back in and take Root’s inside edge. “A forward short-leg is a must,” says Sunil Gavaskar in commentary.
ENG 77/3 after 31 overs: That was close! Bairstow just about gets it past the square-leg fielder to pick up four. The ball was hit in the air and the Indians thought for a second it may carry to the fielder. Bumrah is bowling another fiery spell.
ENG 66/3 after 27.3 overs: WICKET! India start another session strongly. Shami strikes as Sibley flicks it straight to short mid-wicket. The England opener departs for 18 off 70. Bairstow is the new batsman.
ENG 66/2 after 27 overs: Shot of the day! Absolutely glorious batting from Joe Root. Bumrah pitches it full and wide, the right-hander takes a big, confident stride out to drive it powerfully past extra-cover for four.
ENG 62/2 after 26 overs: Just a single off the last ball of that over by Shami. Root playing late and close to his body. He’s a key wicket for England.
6.11 pm: The players are out on the field for the second session. India’s pacers have done well so far and will be keen test England’s middle order. Here we go!
End of 1st session
That’s the end of the first session. England are 61/2 (25 overs). Crawley and Sibley’s partnership was vital for the hosts but Kohli and Co will be happy with their performance so far. Some drama in the last ball as Bumrah struck Sibley on the pads. Pant was extremely keen on taking DRS but Kohli wasn’t convinced. Replay showed the review would’ve gone England’s way with umpire’s call.
ENG 60/2 after 24 overs: Another good over by Thakur, just two runs from it. The right-arm pacer has figures of 0/10 from five overs at the moment. Bumrah is returning to the attack, this will probably be the last over before lunch.
ENG 58/2 after 23 overs: Three fours for Joe Root! Just the start the England captain wanted. Siraj didn’t bowl badly in that over but the right-hander managed to find the gaps.
ENG 42/2 after 21 overs: WICKET! What an eventful over that was by Siraj. India lost a review first after an appeal for caught behind. But this time Kohli is spot on with the DRS call as there was indeed an inside edge. Crawley departs for 27.
ENG 41/1 after 20 overs: Shot! Thakur bangs it in and Crawley pulls it powerfully to beat the fielder in the deep for four. The right-hander is walking out to almost every delivery. Thakur’s pace not a concern for him.
ENG 37/1 after 19 overs: Good over by Siraj, he’s bowling slightly short of a length and attacking the stumps. Maiden over again.
ENG 37/1 after 18 overs: Another maiden over by Thakur. The right-arm pacer is bowling out-swingers exclusively and he manages to beat Crawley’s bat with a beauty to end the over.
ENG 33/1 after 16 overs: Thakur with a superb delivery first up. It was angled in and swung away late to beat Crawlew. Maiden over that.
ENG 33/1 after 15 overs: Shami with three wonderful deliveries to beat the outside edge before Siraj comes on and bowls a fiery over too. India are making their second bowling change now, Thakur is coming into the attack.
ENG 29/1 after 13 overs: Shot of the day so far from Crawley! First bowling change for India as Siraj replaces Bumrah. He pitches it outside off and the England No 3 drives it stylishly past cover for four. Important for Siraj to build on the good work done by Bumrah and Shami in the first hour.
ENG 24/1 after 11 overs: Sibley and Crawley are settling into a partnership but Bumrah and Shami have been mighty impressive so far. They’ve beaten the outside edge consistently and are building pressure. Bumrah with another peach of a delivery to Crawley.
ENG 22/1 after 10 overs: Shami going past the outside edge again. His seam position is as wonderful as ever and he’s hitting the right lengths. India would want to strike again soon with this new ball.
ENG 20/1 after 9 overs: Crawley picks up another boundary with a similar drive past cover. Bumrah won’t be bothered, though. He’s beating the outside edge consistently and bowling with a lot of aggression.
ENG 16/1 after 8 overs: Four for Sibley! This time Shami drifts onto the pads and the right-hander clips it nicely to the fine-leg fence. Not a bad over from Shami, though. He tested the batsmen with a few top deliveries.
ENG 12/1 after 7 overs: Shot! First boundary of the morning and it comes from Crawley’s bat. Bumrah pitched it on a length outside off and the right-hander leaned forward to drive it on-the-rise past cover for four.
ENG 7/1 after 5 overs: Bumrah brings one in sharply and Crawley does well to work the ball past mid-wicket for three. Sibley then gets off the mark with a single. Good over for England, five runs come from it.
ENG 2/1 after 4 overs: Another testing over by Shami. The Indian pacers aren’t giving an inch at the moment. Good, sharp stop by Thakur at mid-on to end the over.
ENG 1/1 after 3 overs: First run for England as Crawley taps it for one. Bumrah has his tail up, he’s getting sharp movement in the air and pitching it just outside off consistently.
ENG 0/1 after 2 overs: Superb first over from Shami too. Good movement for the right-arm quick and he tested Sibley by hitting the right lengths. India are pumped.
ENG 0/1 after 0.5 overs: WICKET! What a start for India! Jasprit Bumrah has struck in the first over! Rory Burns was hit in front and the umpire raised his finger. The review was taken and it went India’s way. Dream start for Virat Kohli and Co!
