2012 Olympic champions Mexico were held to a draw by World Cup winners Germany in the opening encounter of Group C. In a gritty display by both sides, the first half did not yield any goals by either side. However, as the second half began, both teams upped the ante and Mexico struck first with Oribe Peralta scoring in the 52nd minute. However, Serge Gnabry pulled one back seven minutes later for Germany. But, within a span of three minutes, Mexico struck again, this time Rodolfo Pizarro finding the back of net. Sensing victory, Mexico tried their best not to concede a second but Matthias Ginter struck in 78th minute to save Germany the blushes in the opener.
In earlier matches, Brazil were held to a goalless draw by 10-man South Africa. Iraq and Denmark too failed to net a goal and the match ended 0-0. However, Honduras edged past Algeria 3-2 in a thriller.
