Which planet is Michael Phelps from? That's the question everyone seems to be asking. He was not even supposed to participate at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro – he retired after the 2012 Olympics in London but made a comeback in 2014.
Now in just six days, Phelps has won four gold medals at the Olympics. He's outshone the opposition in the 200 metre individual butterfly, 4 X 100 metre freestyle, 4 X 200 metre and 200 metre individual medley.
That last medal which he won on Thursday took him to 22 gold medals overall. The most decorated Olympian in the world is no mood to stop and his overall medal tally now stands at 26 – which is the same number of total medals India have won at the Olympics till date.
Quite simply, Phelps is the best swimmer in the world. His 22 gold medals mean, on his own, he ranks above countries like Ethiopia and Argentina on the overall Olympics gold medal tally. And with two events still left, the possibility of Phelps winning all six gold medals on offer is a very realistic one.
As for India? Well, let's hope they at least manage to open their medal tally at Rio on Day 7.
