Discus thrower Vikas Gowda failed to register his name in the final of the men's discus throw event as he faltered at the qualification stage, registering throws of 57.59 metre, 58.99 metre and 58.70 metre in his three attempts. The 33-year-old's start was woeful, and he had to play catch up. In his third attempt, he needed to get to the 65 metre mark to qualify, which he fell well short of, finishing 28th in the final rankings.

The Karnataka thrower was rusty coming into what might well turn out to be the last Olympics in his career. Gowda won the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Asian Athletics Championships in 2015 but could not replicate the good form in Rio.
