In the second round of the English league cup on Tuesday, Derby County and Carlisle United equalled the longest penalty shootout in an English tournament on Tuesday. The English Football League Cup game's penalty shootout ended 14-13 in Derby's favour after 32 kicks, with Timi Max Elsnik netting the decisive one. There were no hiccups for English Premier League giants Liverpool and Chelsea, who registered wins. The Reds recovered from their weekend defeat in the league with a thumping 5-0 win over Burton Albion.

Walter Mazzari continued to have a tough time with life at Watford as Gillingham registered an upset. Liverpool's Merseyside neighbours Everton also landed a massive win, thumping four goals for no reply against Yeovil Town.

Relentless Bristol Rovers fail to get past Blues

After scoring over the weekend at Watford, Michy Batshuayi scored two to rifle Chelsea through to the next round of the League Cup. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was influential from the centre of the park and created many chances. The 20-year-old clipped the post from an effort too. Batshuayi scored off one of them.

Chelsea's £33 million summer purchase headed in the first goal and Victor Moses doubled their lead, getting on the end of a Cesar Azpilicueta cross. Peter Hartley got one back for the visitors, but Antonio Conte's men went into the lead again with Batshuayi teaming up with Loftus-Cheek. Ellis Harrison got one back from the penalty spot, but Chelsea held on.

Liverpool bury weekend blues with a big win

After falling prey to Burnley over the weekend, Liverpool got back to winning ways through a thumping 5-0 win. Jurgen Klopp still had quite a few of his main men starting the game, making only four changes from the Watford match. Divock Origi opened the account for the Reds in the 15th minute. Roberto Firminho pounced on a lose ball to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at halftime. Daniel Sturridge came on as a substitute, but made an instant impact, scoring a quick brace to complete the rout.

Mazzari's struggles continue at Watford

Everything was going according to plan for Watford after substitute Odion Ighalo put them in the lead in the second half. However, Mark Bryne equalised with eight minutes left on the clock. In the first minute of extra time, striker Bradley Dack scored the decisive goal, atoning for his earlier penalty miss. New boss Mazzari is still searching for his first win at Watford, losing two out of his first three games.

Peter Crouch strikes back

Against Stevenage, Mark Hughes made changes but still put out a strong Stoke City side, who were humbled at home by a classy display from Pep Guardiola's Manchester City over the weekend. Peter Crouch scored as early as the 13th minute. Phil Bardsley's ferocious 30-yard strike double the Potters' lead. Marco Arnautovic, who was influential all evening, delivered a sumptuous ball to Crouch in the second half, and the striker made it 3-0 to Stoke.

There was a good chance for Jonathan Walters, but the 35-year-old completed his hat-trick through a stylish effort, showing great chest control from a right-wing cross before burying the ball into the net.
