Men's singles world No. 1 Novak Djokovic began his US Open campaign with a four-set victory over Poland's Jerzy Janowicz on Monday. Djokovic, who has struggled with a wrist injury, won 6-3 5-7 6-2 6-1 after calling for a medical timeout in the first set to allow the trainer to work on his elbow and arm. Djokovic will face the Czech Republic’s Jiri Vesely, who beat India's Saketh Myneni, in round two. The Czech has beaten the Serb at the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this year.
Rafa Nadal demolishes Denis Istomin
Two-time US Open champion Rafael Nadal beat Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-1 6-4 6-2 to progress to the next round. The Spaniard will face Italy's Andreas Seppi in the next round. An injury forced Nadal to retire early from the French Open and kept him out of Wimbledon before bagging the gold medal in the doubles at the Rio Olympics.
John Isner stages brilliant comeback
American John Isner, seeded 20th, came back from two sets down to beat 18-year-old compatriot Frances Tiafoe. Isner beat the teenager 3-6 4-6 7-6 (5) 6-3 7-6 (3) in a match that lasted for more than three-and-a-half hours.
Marin Cilic begins quest for another major
Former US Open champion Marin Cilic began his campaign with a 6-4 7-5 6-1 victory over Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil on Monday. The seventh-seeded Croatian, who beat world No. 2 Andy Murray in the Cincinnati Open final last week, eased past the Brazilian world No. 108.
Richard Gasquet falls on day one
Britain’s Kyle Edmund upset 13th seed Richard Gasquet of France 6-2 6-2 6-3 at Flushing Meadows in one of the day's big upsets. The Briton, 21, will face American wildcard Ernesto Escobedo in round two. Gasquet was breathing hard from the middle stages of the match, but he said there was no residual pain from the back injury that cut him down at Wimbledon. The Frenchman said of his opponent, “I’ve seen him play many times, so I knew how good he is. He deserved it. He played well, will be very good in the future. So I’m not surprised at all.”
Angelique Kerber makes quick work of her opponent
Germany’s Angelique Kerber got her pursuit of a first US Open title off to a winning start. The second seed and Australian Open champion was leading Polona Hercog 6-0, 1-0 when the Slovenian quit owing to the sweltering heat.
Olympic gold medallist exists in Round 1
Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig, who won the gold medal in the women’s singles competition at the Rio Olympics, lost to China’s Zheng Saisai 6-4 6-2 in a surprising exit on Monday. Puig seeded 32nd, had beaten Kerber for the gold in Brazil, but was hardly a test for Saisai, ranked 61 in the world.
Garbine Muguruza digs deep for win
Spain’s Garbine Muguruza came back from a set down to win 2-6 6-0 6-3 against Belgian qualifier Elise Mertens. The French Open champion needed medical attention after dropping the first set. The treatment seemed to have worked wonders on the champ as she won seven straight games and went on to clinch the match. Muguruza will now face Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia for a place in the last 32.
