The defending Ranji Trophy champions, Mumbai finished on a high in the tour game against the New Zealanders, dismissing the opposition for 235 in their second innings on Day 3.
The New Zealand spinners failed to create an impact as Siddhesh Lad's century took his team to 464/8, 140 more than the Kiwis before Mumbai decided to declare. Lad then contributed with the ball too along with Parikshit Valsangkar (3/41) as wickets fell in quick succession for the visitors.
There was no change in New Zealand's approach from the first innings as they continued to go for quick runs. Luke Ronchi (107) powered his way to stake a claim in the team for the upcoming Test series against India. Martin Guptill continued to struggle for runs, falling for a duck following the 15 he made in the first innings. The opener's place is certainly in doubt, going into the first Test in Kanpur on September 22.
There was plenty of shuffling in NZ's batting order, which saw bizarre changes like pacers Doug Bracewell and Trent Boult batting higher up the order. Skipper Kane Williamson did not even come out to bat. Other than Ronchi, only BJ Watling (43) got to a respectable score.
Brief Scores:
New Zealanders 324/7 (Tom Latham 55 not out, Kane Williamson 50, Mitchell Santner 45; Balwinder Sandhu 2/21) and 235 (Luke Ronchi 107, BJ Watling 45; Parikshit Valsangkar 3/41) drew with Mumbai 464/8 (Kaustubh Pawar 100, Suryakumar Yadav 103, Siddhesh Lad 100; Ish Sodhi 2/132)
