Trinity Gay, the teenage daughter of United States Olympian Tyson Gay, died after an early morning shooting in Lexington, Kentucky on Sunday. The police have arrested one man in connection with the crime.
Tyson, a former world 100 metre and 200 metre champion, confirmed the death of his 15-year-old daughter. "She didn't make it. I'm so confused," Gay said. "She was just here last week for fall break. It's so crazy. I have no idea what happened."
The events happened at around 4 am on Sunday, according to Lexington police. They said a group of men in two cars opened fire on each other and Trinity was shot in the neck owing to a stray bullet. Trinity was taken to UK Hospital in a private vehicle, where she later died, police said.
“She was so innocent, she was so innocent,” her mother, Shoshana Boyd, told a news channel. “I just want people to stop shooting and realise who they’re hurting. It’s just random. They don’t understand, they don’t understand who they’re hurting. I should never have to bury my child,” Boyd said. “She wanted to be the fastest woman in the world, and they took that away from her.”
Boyd said her daughter wanted to become a surgeon and also hoped to match the athletic glory of her father.
