Australian umpire Sam Nogajski was hospitalised after suffering dehydration during of the Ranji Trophy sixth-round match between Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh in Mysuru on Monday. After the Tasmanian was taken to hospital, the second on-field umpire, Virender Sharma, officiated at both ends till the close of play, reported PTI.
Nogajski had reportedly complained of stomach ache and vomiting before the start of the second day’s play and was admitted to a local hospital. “The umpire has been admitted in a local hospital at 7 am after he complained of loose motion and stomach ache,” the Karnataka State Cricket Association’s Mysuru convener Balachandra was quoted as saying by PTI. “The doctors attending [to] him said it is a case of dehydration,” he added.
The report also added that despite KSCA officials hoping for Nogajski to make a comeback after lunch, the hospital authorities advised the official to take complete rest and not take any further part in the match.
A secondary school teacher-turned-umpire, Nogajski’s career has witnessed a steady rise in the Australian circuit, having regularly featured in the Sheffield Shield, List-A and Big Bash League games since making his debut in 2011. Nogajski has also stood in four women’s One-Day Internationals, and 10 women’s Twenty20 International fixtures.
