Teofilo ‘Teo’ Gutierrez has played his part in Colombia’s resurgence as a South American giant. Here, in an emotionally charged contest between Argentine giants Boca Juniors and Rosario Central, his petulant act sparks of a giant melee, which involved both sets of players.

Gutierrez scored the equaliser for his side and wheeled off to the corner to celebrate his goal. Facing the crowd, the 31-year-old gesticulated with his hand as if to submit his loyalty for River Plate, Boca’s arch-rivals, and with whom Gutierrez had a stint.

This riled up the Boca players, which included former Manchester United and Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez. Three Boca players confronted Gutierrez and there was plenty of pushing and shoving at one end of the pitch. The referee was reduced to a mere spectator.

Proceedings stated to take an ugly turn when the incensed crowd started to throw objects onto the field. Gutierrez and Boca’s Ricardo Centurion were handed red cards with the former being escorted off the field with a security personnel by his side. The scuffle between the players, though, was far from over.
