PV Sindhu continued to build on her recent winning streak and battled hard to to beat China’s Xiaoyu Liang 21-17, 21-23, 21-18 in the Hong Kong Open quarter-final in Kowloon on Friday.
The nail-biting battle lasted for a little over an hour with Sindhu just about edging past her opponent after going down in the second game.
Sindhu won the first game 21-17 and the gritty Liang came back in the game but just like some of the encounters that Sindhu has played after her silver medal finish in the Rio Olympics, she did not let momentum shift in the third game.
The Olympic silver medallist could potentially meet compatriot Saina Nehwal in the semi-final if the latter wins her match against Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi. Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzy-ying also booked a place in the last four after comfortably beating Japan’s Aya Ohori.
