Magnus Carlsen clinched the World Chess Championship for the third consecutive time after defeating challenger Sergey Karjakin of Russia. Carlsen sealed victory after a series of tiebreakers on Thursday in New York.

The game was tied after 12 regular rounds, which forced it into the tie-breakers where Carlsen eventually edged out Karjakin in the final phase of four quickfire games to maintain his three-year reign as champion.

Carlsen, who celebrated his 26th birthday on Wednesday, beat Karjakin, in the 50th move of the 16th game of the match. He finally put his opponent in check in the fourth game of the tiebreaker, to bring the 19-day contest to an end.

Carlsen had defeated India’s Viswanathan Anand in 2013 and 2014 to win his previous two titles.
