Former World No. 1, Novak Djokovic announced on Facebook on late Monday evening that Boris Becker and he have ended their working association. Their split comes almost four years after they joined forces, in December 2013.
Prior to Djokovic’s announcement, speculation had been running rife that Becker would not continue to be a part of his coaching team. A few days ago, Becker’s impassive responses in an interview with Daily Mail added to the prevailing doubts. In that interview, Becker had stated, “We are in the process but I can’t tell you anything more than that. I couldn’t tell you yes and I couldn’t tell you no.”
Under Becker’s tutelage, who was Djokovic’s co-coach with his long-time mentor Marian Vajda, the 29-year-old won six Grand Slams and 14 ATP Masters titles. This year alone, he won two Grand Slams, one of which came at the French Open that saw him complete the career Grand Slam, and four ATP Masters titles, in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Toronto.
After winning the French Open, Djokovic was however unable to prolong his momentous run. Though he won the Toronto Masters in August, he was not able to assert his claim of dominance as in the first half of the season. As a result of his slump, he also lost his hold on to his place in the ATP rankings, slipping to the second place after having been dethroned by Andy Murray.
