Australian opener David Warner’s brilliant recent run of form has put him just two points behind India’s Virat Kohli at the top of the International Cricket Council One-day International batting charts.
In the latest list that was issued by the ICC on Saturday, Warner at third was at 846 points and moved within touching distance of the Indian Test skipper, who is on 848 points at second place. The list is topped by South African captain AB de Villiers with 861 points.
Warner amassed 299 runs in the three-match ODI Trans-Tasman series, which saw Australia clean-sweep New Zealand 3-0. New Zealand opener Martin Guptill and Australia captain Steven Smith achieved career-best rankings. Smith broke into the top 10 while Guptill moved to the sixth spot, only five points behind Kiwi captain Kane Williamson, who is on fifth with 761 points.
Kohli, De Villiers and Warner will have a shootout for the top spots in January 2017 as India play England in a three-match ODI series while Australia host Pakistan in a five-match series. South Africa, meanwhile, are hosting Sri Lanka in a five-match series.
