Portugal and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo edged out Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to claim his fourth Ballon d’Or on Monday.

Ronaldo played a crucial role to help Real Madrid beat city rivals Atletico Madrid to become European champions for the 11th time earlier this year.

He later led Portugal to the Euro 2016 title in France. His first major trophy with the national side. In the year so far, Ronaldo has scored 48 goals for club and country.

Griezmann finished was the top scorer at Euro 2016, and played a crucial role in leading France to the final of the competition where they eventually lost to Portugal.

Messi meanwhile, scored 41 goals in all competitions to lead Barcelona to a La Liga and cup double in the 2015/16 season. He had won the award last year.

Ronaldo had previously won the top award in 2014 when it was formally merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year accolade.

No one other than Ronaldo or Messi has won the award since 2007 when Brazil’s Kaka took home the trophy.
