Churchill Brothers put forward a convincing display at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Goa on Sunday to beat DSK Shivajians 3-0 and move from the bottom of the I-League table.
Anthony Wolfe and Ansumana Kromah scored two goals in the space of four minutes just past the hour mark. In the dying seconds of the game, Surabuddin Mollick unleashed a thumping long-ranger, and the effort should easily be marked out as one of the best goals this season.
Churchill’s attacking trio of Brandon Fernandes, Wolfe and Kromah kept the Pune-based side busy throughout the contest. Until the hour mark, though, a combination of sloppy finishing and a resolute display from the experienced Subrata Paul kept the score goalless at half-time.
It was the away side who created the first clear-cut opportunity after the break. On the counter-attack, 17-year-old Pranjal Bhumij ran for 30 metre and rifled a shot, but the effort only found the crossbar.
Churchill scored the opener just a couple of minutes later, with Wolfe latching on to Fernandes’ through ball and finding the net from the near post. Three minutes later, Chesterpoul Lyngdoh put Kromah clear, and the Liberian made no mistake, showing good composure to put the ball past the onrushing goalie.
With seconds left for the referee to blow the whistle, Mollick put the gloss on the scoreline with a brilliant volley.
Brief score:
- Churchill Brothers 3 (Anthony Wolfe, Ansumana Kromah, Surabuddin Mollick) beat DSK Shivajians 0
