Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Bournemouth after Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed to convert from the penalty spot in a Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday.
With the game all square at 1-1, United were awarded a penalty in the 71st minute after Adam Smith was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Ibrahimovic stepped to take the shot, but was denied by keeper Artur Boruc, who got a strong hand in to keep the scores level.
United had taken the lead in the 23rd minute through Marcus Rojo diverted home from a cross-shot by Valencia. Bournemouth had levelled things up through a penalty of their own in the 40th minute through Joshua King.
United though were handed the advantage almost immediately as Andrew Surmon received a second yellow. The Red Devils though failed to make most of the one-man advantage, as a stubborn Bournemouth held on to secure a well-earned draw.
Zlatan, Mings in the dock
Chaos reigned at Old Trafford as tempers flared during the stormy clash on Saturday.
Controversy grew as after Wayne Rooney and teammate, Ibrahimovic, collided. and fell to the ground just outside the Bournemouth box.
Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings, who was returning to his position, stepped on the Swede’s head while trying to jump over him. Whether deliberate or not, it raised calls for a red card.
Replays showed that Mings made no attempts to avoid Ibrahimovic. Later, clearly angered by the incident, Ibrahimovic lept high in the box and aimed an elbow at Mings that also warranted a red card.
Both players, though, escaped punishment and could face retrospective action.
