Sam Querrey capped his remarkable week at Acapulco with stunning win over Rafael Nadal in the final to win the Mexican Open on Saturday. The unseeded American clinched he biggest title of his career with a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over the second seed.

The tall 29-year-old thundered 19 aces and coupled with his powerful groundstroke winners, overcame Nadal, who was yet to drop a set in the tournament. He raced through the first set without facing a break and broke Nadal’s serve to love in the eight game. The Spaniard tried to fight back in the second set but failed to convert any of his six break point chances.

In a field featuring five of the world’s Top 10 players, Querrey played sensational tennis to become the first American champion in the tournament’s 24-year history.

His run to the final included victories over fifth seed David Goffin in the second-round, fourth seed Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals and sixth seed Nick Kyrgios, who has beaten top seed Novak Djokovic, in the semi-finals.

This is Querrey’s ninth ATP World Tour singles title and second at the 500-level. The American is set to rise up to 26 in the latest ATP ranking out on Monday.
