Roger Federer overhauled a few more records as he captured the 2017 Indian Wells title against Stan Wawrinka on Sunday. The win not only widened his win-to-loss record against his countryman to 20-3, but also gave him his first win over Wawrinka in the final of an ATP tournament.
Twitter was, however, quick to regale the world with other varied interpretations of Federer’s win. And, who better to start the Twitter verse off than the man whom he had defeated in the final – Wawrinka himself.
The World No 3 was in tears during the post-match celebration, even as Federer seemed to be grinning ear-to-ear awaiting his turn on the podium. Without missing a beat, and much like the good friends they are, Wawrinka first congratulated and then engaged in some banter, which had even the former World No 1 in splits.
Continuing further, the Swiss No 1 was, however, in full praise of Federer, even going on to mention:
Stan to Federer: I lost some tough ones against you, but when you played the final in Australia I was still your biggest fan #BNPPO17

Women’s champion Elena Vesnina too included Federer in her post-win celebratory message. Her take: she couldn’t hold on to the trophy, because the Swiss had ‘stolen’ it.

She would show you the 🏆, but @RogerFederer stole it 😜 #BNPPO17 pic.twitter.com/W8vcX7xfIw
Former top-10 player, John Isner, meanwhile, had a question to ask of Federer:
Are we 100% sure Fed is from Planet 🌏?

Jokes aside, Federer clearly looked like he had turned back time:
Federer opens a season with a 6-0 mark vs. the Top 10 for just the second time. Last was in 2004 when he went 18-0. THIRTEEN years ago.

Also, Laureus called and checked in for the 18-time Grand Slam champion’s candidacy for its ‘Comeback of the Year’ award:

A strong contender for Laureus World Comeback of the Year? #BNPPO17 pic.twitter.com/lvDNKwNd4S
There was some more trivia associated with his (potentially) winning the Laureus award:
What comeback, he's in pole position for a 5th Laureus Athlete of the year :-) @LaureusSport

But, encompassing these, there also seemed to be a catch. The frenzy of top-ranked players’ exodus from the forthcoming Miami Open looked to have a new candidate in his midst.
Some speculation that Federer might skip Miami after big run in Indian Wells. Says he hopes to play as late as possible but plans to play
