Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova defeated the American-Kazakh pair of Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals at the Miami Open. The third seeds won the quarter-final in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 in 64 minutes.
Mirza and Strycova put in 67% of their first serves to their sixth seeded opponents’ 65%. They converted 74% points off their first serves whereas King and Shvedova could win only 50% points off their first serves. The Indo-Czech pair also did well on their first serve returns, converting 50% of return points to their opponents managing only 26%. King and Shvedova, however, fared slightly better when returning off second serves. They won 59% points off second serve returns to Mirza and Strycova’s 56%.
The match had seven breaks of serve, with the higher seeds clinching five of those to convincingly topple their rivals. Mirza and Strycova now await the winner between Andreja Klepac and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, and fifth seeds Martina Hingis and Yun-Jan Chan in the penultimate round.
