World No 104 Parupalli Kashyap upset the 59th ranked Supannyu Avihingsanon in the second round of the China Masters in Changzhou on Wednesday. Kashyap won in straight games 21-16, 21-17 in 45 minutes.
It was a battle of attrition as Avihingsanon never let the Indian veteran get comfortable. Despite the tough fight proffered by the Thai player, Kashyap held his nerve to claim the win and move into the third round where he will take on third seed, and home player, Qiao Bin. Qiao defeated En Chia Chang of Chinese Taipei in their second round match 21-11, 21-16.
The China Masters is Kashyap’s first tournament in the 2017 season. The 30-year-old is also looking to improve on his rankings.
Harsheel Dani advances to round-of-16
Harsheel Dani joined Kashyap in the pre-quarterfinals with a win over China’s Runze Yan. The World No 102 won 21-16, 22-20 in 36 minutes and will play another Chinese player, and 180th ranked Sun Feixiang in the third round.
