India’s challenge at the Wimbledon came to an end on Thursday after both Rohan Bopanna and Zeel Desai lost their respective doubles matches.

Bopanna and his partner Gabriela Dabrowski lost in their mixed doubles quarter-final to the unseeded team of Henri Kontinen and Heather Watson. The tenth seeded Indo-Canadian pair took the lead in the match, by winning the first set in the tie-break, 7-6. However, the defending champions were quick to negate their deficit by taking the second set 6-4.

In the final set, the momentum constantly shifted between the two teams. While the Finnish-British team drew first blood by breaking their opponents’ serve in the seventh game, they weren’t able to consolidate the break bringing the set back to four-all. A second break of serve on Bopanna and Dabrowski’s serve in the 11th game, however, proved to be decisive with Kontinen and Watson serving out the match in the 12th game.

Earlier, the Indo-Swiss duo of Zeel Desai and Lulu Sun lost in the second round of the girls doubles. The second-seeded American duo of Taylor Johnson and Claire Lu defeated Desai and Sun in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0. Desai and Sun had several chances to get a break for themselves in the second set, but weren’t able to capitalise on their chances allowing their higher seeded opponents to move into the quarter-finals of the girls doubles event.
