Parupalli Kashyap upset the top-seed Hyun Lee in the first round of the men’s singles at the Yonex US Open on Wednesday. Kashyap put up a dominant performance to win 21-16, 21-10, 21-19 to advance in the draw.
In the third game, Kashyap overturned a five-point deficit, climbing up from 10-15 down, to clinch a nail-biting win. In his second-round match on Thursday, Kashyap will face Hungary’s Gergely Krausz.
In some of the other results of the day at the US Open, the second seed HS Prannoy moved into the second round with a straight-games win over Luka Wraber of Austria, 21-12, 21-16. Fifth seeded Sameer Verma also reached the second round with a win over Vietnam’s Hoang Nam Nyugen 21-5, 21-10.
Russian Open Grand Prix
Eighth seeded Anand Pawar reached the men’s singles quarter-finals of the Russian Open Grand Prix on Thursday. Pawar defeated Malaysia’s Chi Wing Lim 10-12, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10. In Friday’s quarter-final, Pawar will face Russian second seed Vladimir Malkov.
In women’s singles, sixth seeded Rasika Raje defeated Japan’s Minami Kawashima in the third round, 13-11, 11-7, 15-14 to advance into the last-eight. Raje will take on another Japanese player, the fourth seeded Natsuki Nidaira in the quarter-final to be played on Friday. Nidaira defeated India’s Shikha Gautam in the third round, 11-3, 13-11, 11-6.
