Second ODI, as it happened: Kuldeep, Bhuvneshwar bowl India to a 2-0 lead

Rain had more than a say in Chennai in the first One-Day International where Australia were all at sea, trying to chase down a revised target of 164 in 21 overs. India wrapped up a comprehensive 26-run win there.

Eden Gardens was expected to be the same as well, but for a brief break of play, a full match did get completed – and it didn’t end well for Australia again. Virat Kohli’s 92, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s brilliant spell and Kuldeep Yadav’s hat-trick meant India have taken a 2-0 lead.

OUT! Moment of magic from MS Dhoni. Maxwell steps down to take on Chahal, misses the ball, it looks like it hits pad and lobs up a bit. After 15 overs, Australia 76/2: The first 12 overs were a study in contrast. Bhuvi’s figures: 6-2-9-2 while Bumrah & Pandya: 6-1-42-0. Chahal is the first spinner coming on an starts well, some good turn. But Head and Smith have not let the run rate get higher. Constantly finding the boundaries and especially on this lightning quick Eden outfield.

After 10 overs, Australia 47/2: Contrasting starts for Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah. Bhuvi’s figures read 5-2-7-2. Bumrah’s 4-1-27-0. Bhuvi should have had 3, if Rohit had caught Travis Head at first slip. Pandya comes in to bowl the 10th. Head and Smith are dealing in boundaries at the moment and the run rate is well under check.

Here’s the clarification for the Pandya incident:

CONFUSION, DRAMA: First, Pandya hits a full toss in the air and is caught by Smith. And then he starts to walk off the ground with the rain falling. Not sure what he was thinking there - he should have known it was a no-ball. Smith realises what’s going on, throws the ball to the bowler, and the run out is complete. But the umpires have given it no ball - rightly but also say the ball is dead before the run out was done – not so sure about that. Players are walking off and Smith is having a heated argument with the umpires. Looks like Pandya will come out to bat again. Play stopped at 237 for 6 (and not 7) after 47.3 overs.

OUCH! Pandya has been hit on the side of his helmet at the non-striker end by a powerful slog from Bhuvneshwar. That looked very nasty but after a brief visit by the physio he’s good to carry on. After 47 overs, India 233/6

After 45 overs, India 222/6: The big finish that Kohli was setting India up for has not come. Not by a long shot. 15 runs from the last 5 overs, just the one boundary from Pandya when he cut past cover for 4. MASSIVE CHEERS: And guess why? It’s MS Dhoni walking out to bat in his 300th ODI for India. (He has played 3 for Asia XI).

OUT! A few balls back Kedar Jadhav played an extra-ordinary shot for six. Just outside off, he stayed in the crease, cut it over point for six. Same shot against Coulter-Nile, he stayed in the crease, but this cut it straight to point – Maxwell takes it.

Kedar Jadhav has entered his zone, ladies and gents, as we touch the 35-over mark. Remember, he scored 90 off 72 balls against England last time he played here. Playing some typically unorthodox shots and has raced to a 23-ball 24. The partnership has crossed 50 at more than run-a-ball and India are 185/3.

Right 31 overs gone, another drinks break. India are 154/3, Kohli on 72. It’s been a good knock for him, considering the weather conditions. How much will India aim at?

Manish Pandey is gone as well. An absolutely nothing shot to Agar, and he is bowled for just 3. Not making use of his opportunities. India 132/3.

After 25 overs, India 124/2: More sweating, more water breaks. It’s been tough for all the players out there. Manish Pandey is the new batsman in and will look to take some load of Kohli.

WICKET! And the way the two were batting, it was only logical that the breakthrough would come with a run-out. Both batsmen tired, both batsmen took the first run lightly, Rahane turns back and puts his hand up hinting he can’t make it but Kohli keeps going, and in the end Rahane’s dive finds him just short. Emphasis on just.

Milestone for Ajinkya Rahane: And 20th ODI fifty for Jinx! It’s been a fine knock by the Mumbaikar so far. Started positively with a flurry of drives and has built a solid base with his captain.

Milestone for Virat Kohli: The Indian captain had scored 46 runs in the last 6 innings (all formats combined) and he has a half-century to break that run of form today. Raises his bat, and immediately signals for water, on his knees. That kind of a day in Kolkata.

After 20 overs gone, India 101/1: Australia started well but haven’t been sharp at all. Kohli started edgily but is looking better and better. Rahane is batting like a dream and edging towards a 50. India well on top here and have just crossed the 100-mark.

2.47 pm: All steadily ticking along. The humidity seems to have really gotten to Australia...they look very flat. Wade really struggling. The stand is 62. India 82/1 in 17 overs.

2.30 pm: And now Kohli is slowly getting into the groove. Pulling out those trademark cover drives. The partnership is getting along nicely. Nearing 50. There’s a hold-up as the Aussies struggle with the Kolkata humidity. India 64/1 in 13 overs.

2.15 pm: Rahane is still playing some exquisite cover drives and even Kohli joins him in the show. A little bit of extra bounce did put him in some trouble though. India 43/1.

1.57 pm: Gone! Rohit Sharma, who has a fantastic record here, is gone! Drives straight to Coulter-Nile who takes it on the second try. He induces an edge from Kohli who survives but then Rahane drives him beautifully through the covers. India 26/1.

1.55 pm: Pat Cummins has bowled a stunning over for Australia but this is still a much better start for India. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane have hit some lovely drives. India 19/0 after 5.

1.40 pm: Just like the last match, it is a quiet start for India but they haven’t lost a wicket yet. The pitch has early bounce. India are 5/0 after 2 overs.

1.05 pm: Kohli wins the toss. India will bat first. Kohli is warming up to batting first, eh. He mentions that with two wrist spinners, he’s confident of defending a total. No changes for India.

Smith has a grin on his face when he’s reminded of his 100th ODI. Says he would have batted first as well. Two changes for Australia: Kane Richardson and Ashton Agar are in for James Falukner and Adam Zampa.

12.45 pm: Good day. First, the good news. It’s not raining. Not now, at least. It is, however, quite gloomy and overcast.
