Three boxers who won gold medals at the AIBA Women’s World Youth Championships in November have returned the cows that were gifted by the Haryana government, stating that they kick and don’t give milk, Times of India reported.

India finished with a rich haul of seven medals – five gold and two bronze – in the event that was held in Guwahati with six of them hailing from Haryana. Following their triumph, Bharatiya Janata Party minister Om Prakash Dhankar announced that the
Haryana girls – Jyoti, Nitu, Sakshi, Shashi, Anupama and Neha – would be rewarded with one Indian breed cow each.

Barely a month after the announcement, Jyoti, Nitu and Sakshi (all gold medallists), have returned their cows. Rohtak-based Jyoti said that the cow had injured her mother. She said, “My mother served the cow for good five days. Forget giving us milk, the animal hit her thrice. In fact, my mother suffered a damaged ligament after being kicked by the cow and we immediately returned the gift,” she was quoted as saying in the report.

“We are happy with our buffaloes,” she added.

The 18-year-old has also qualified for the Youth Olympic Games that will be held later this year. Her coach, Vijay Hooda, said that cows of a local breed were handed to the boxers.
