Liverpool versus Manchester City contests over the years have produced many Premier League classics but Sunday’s encounter may have just risen to the top of the podium. This edge-of-the-seat clash at Anfield, which saw City’s 30-match unbeaten streak in the league draw to a close, was hailed for its thrilling attacking play, and the clinical finishing in front of goal.
The defending, though, from both sides, left a lot to be desired. While Liverpool, lead by the irresistible Mohamed Salah, continue to find the back of the net for fun, their back-line continues to be under the scanner.
The fans from other Premier League clubs breathed a huge sigh of relief. Before this fixture kicked off, there was not a single side who weren’t taken to the cleaners by Pep Guardiola’s rampant squad. The Arsenal fans, who were still licking their wounds after hearing about star forward Alexis Sanchez’s impending exit, and a 1-2 loss to Bournemouth, had something to smile about. Arsene Wenger’s side from 2003-’04 will continue to be the only side in the Premier League era who will be called the “Invincibles”.
Great game at Anfield. Liverpool incessant, attacking and fully deserved winners. Manchester City still so brave in possession even when behind. Kept going and even shredded a few nerves in the closing minutes. Top quality from first to last.

Huge win for #lfc. Shows Klopp’s impact again. Inspiring man-manager, makes good players better, fearless tactics, bond with fans, a manager completely in tune with his club’s ethos. #LIVMCI

Wow. What a brilliant game. Liverpool too good going forward for City today. #LIVMCI

Most pleasing aspect of that game was Liverpool’s collective attitude at start of second-half. Didn’t feel sorry for themselves or fear going on to lose. Ferocious & on the front foot. Crowd played their part too. One & all deserved more than a nervy finish.

After Ilkay Gundogan scored a stunning goal to make it 4-3, there were signs of City scoring another late goal. But Liverpool held on:

This is how you welcome the champions-elect at home. Not while sitting back with your arse exposed, eh? It certainly helps that you have a coach who can produce an attacking masterclass, not a defensive one. 😉 #LIVMCI #LFC

Liverpool has sent a CLEAR statement to the league. You need at least 4 goals and a bit of luck at the end to beat Manchester City. #LIVMCI

Who needs Coutinho?
Sell Coutinho to Barcelona, then smack up previously unbeaten Man City. It’s been quite a week for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool. Huge win. #Coutinwho

Liverpool have won more Premier League games without Coutinho (7/10 - 70% won) than with him (6/13 - 46% won) this season.

Liverpool's incessant pressing today is not possible without all of Klopps player rotation over the holidays. Fantastic squad management from the boss. With excellent support and data from his fitness staff. From top to bottom Liverpool are moving in the right direction. #LFC
