In a match for the ages, Juan Martin del Potro handed Roger Federer his first defeat of 2018 to lift the Indian Wells title and extended his own win streak to 11 matches, including a title run earlier this month at Acapulco.
The former US Open champion stunned the top seed 6-4, 6-7 (8/10), 7-6 (7/2) to win his first Masters title and second consecutive ATP crown. Del Potro was competing in his first Indian Wells final since 2013, when he lost to Rafael Nadal.

Del Potro, nagged by wrist injuries throughout his career, survived three match points before claiming the championship in a third-set tie-breaker, ending a two hour, 42 minute marathon contest. It was Del Potro’s seventh victory over Federer in 25 career meetings, one of those wins coming in the 2009 US Open final.

Del Potro’s remarkable win was hailed across social media as the 29-year-old won his first Masters title. The Argentinian was once one of tennis’ hottest young talents before his career was derailed by injuries and almost quit in frustration two years back.

With @BNPPARIBASOPEN title, @DelPotroJuan becomes the first Argentine to win in Indian Wells in event history (since 1976). Del Potro also has now won 4 of the 6 ATP World Tour finals he has played against #Federer, although Federer still leads the overall head-to-head 18-7.

There had been 69 straight European winners of ATP Masters 1000 titles (stretching back to April 2010) until Jack Sock won Paris in November. Del Potro makes it two in a row for the "rest of the world".

match of the year status now achieved

A remarkably small subset: tennis fans who do not like Del Potro. Escapes the Nadal/Federer/Djokovic border wars and presents so well...
— Jon Wertheim (@jon_wertheim) March 18, 2018
Early contender for ATP match of the year sees Roger Federer's win streak broken. The most ardent Fed fan would need a heart of stone not to feel a tiny bit pleased for Del Potro.

“In the Olympic Games, after the Djokovic game, my tennis life changed again », Del Potro. Novak now waiting for regular gifts through the years.

In my opinion Delpotro’s coming back is even more impressive than Federer’s due to his perseverance from multiple wrist surgeries and longer time a way from the game. I don’t think he gets enough credit for his comebacks. Can’t wait for today’s final.

36 year-old Federer against 3-wrist-surgeries Del Potro, both playing like this in 2018. Pretty bloody awesome.
