Elavenil Valarivan, on Thursday, won the 10m Air Rifle Women Junior gold medal at the first ISSF Junior World Cup of the season in Sydney.

Elavenil, who finished 28th in last year’s Junior World Championship in Suhl, secured the win with a decisive 10.7 in her 24th shot, compensating the 9.6 she nailed with her previous one and besting Chinese Taipei’s Lin Ying-Shin.

The 18-year-old, who’s competing in her second ISSF event, claimed gold with 249.8 points, also making, at the end of the qualification round, a new Qualification World Record with 631.4 points.

Chinese shooter Wang Zeru, 18, clinched the bronze medal by recording 228.4 points in her first ISSF event.

India’s other finalists – Shreya Agrawal and Zeena Khitta – finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Elavenil, Shreya and Zeena also climbed atop the team podium taking gold, while Chinese Taipei’s Lin, Tsai Yi-Ting and Hung Chen-Ching finished in 2nd place. The team bronze medal was awarded to Zhu, Wang and Gao Mingwei of the People’s Republic of China.

Elavenil had also won a bronze medal at the FISU World Shooting Sport Championship last week. Meanwhile, Arjun Babuta won a bronze medal in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event, finishing below Yuqi Liu of China and Zalan Pekler of Hungary.

Arjun Babuta wins bronze in men’s 10m Air Rifle

Arjun Babuta won his second Junior World Cup medal after clinching bronze in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event. The 19-year-old, who scored 226.3 points, finished below China’s Liu Yuqi (247.1) and Hungary’s Zalan Pekler (246.0).

Arjun’s countrymen Surya Pratap Singh and Shahu Tushar Mane finished sixth and eighth respectively.

Arjun had won the bronze medal in Gabala, Azerbaijan in 2016 and was the silver medalist at last year’s Asian Championship in Wako City, Japan.
