Top seeds in the men’s double draw, Berry Angriawan and Hardianto from Indonesia, won their final in Sydney on Sunday to be crowned Australian Open Super 300 tournament champions. The pair had defeated India’s Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy 17-21, 15-21 in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Taking on their countrymen and second seeds Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pangkaryanira and Ade Yusuf Santoso, Angriawan and Haridianto lived up to their billing, winning a see-saw final 21-9, 9-21, 21-15 in 52 minutes.

Attri and Reddy were the only Indian players left in contention over the weekend of the Australian Open after the men’s singles campaign came to a disappointing end on Friday. Second seed B Sai Praneeth and fourth seed Sameer Verma lost in the quarter-finals.

With no seeded singles players making it to the finals, China’s Cai Yanyan and Lu Guangzu won the women’s and men’s singles titles respectively. Guangzu, a qualifier who had defeated Verma in the quarter-final, defeated countryman Zhou Zeqi (another qualifier) 21-8, 23-21 in the final.

Second seeds Ayako Sakuramoto and Yukiko Takahata from Japan won the women’s doubles title while Seung Jae Seo and Chae Yujung from Korea walked away with the mixed doubles winners’ medals.

In spite of their semi-final defeat, Attri and Reddy will move up into the world’s top 25 when the rankings are updated, on Thursday.
