French forward Antoine Griezmann announced on Wednesday that he is set to stay at Atletico Madrid. Making his announcement public via a documentary called ‘La Decision’, the Frenchman decided to extend his contract with the Rojiblancos.

The transfer window was rife with speculation that Griezmann would move to a major European club, with reports stressing that a move to Spanish heavyweights Barcelona was imminent.

“He is clearly a great player,” Lionel Messi said when asked about the Atletico Madrid striker, although he said he was ‘not 100% sure’ if the French striker would make the move to Catalonia.

“Good players always have an understanding and he’s at an exceptional moment in his career,” said Messi.

The former Real Sociedad forward moved to Atletico Madrid in 2014, and has scored 112 goals in 209 games for the capital outfit, picking up an Europa League winners’ medal this season after defeating Marseille. He had also won the Spanish Super Cup with Atletico in 2014.

Griezmann had set the Euros alight in 2016, winning the Golden Boot for his six goals and capturing a host of individual accolades that season. Voted to the Euros team of the season, he was also named French Player of the Year and Player of the Tournament for Euro 2016.
