Lionel Messi’s dream of taking his country to World Cup glory lies in tatters.
Argentina slipped to the brink of an embarrassing World Cup group-stage exit on Thursday after Croatia beat the South Americans 3-0 to progress to the last 16.
A goalkeeping howler from Willy Caballero allowed Ante Rebic to give Croatia a 53rd-minute lead, and late goals from Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic left Messi and Argentina needing an unlikely series of results to keep their hopes of progressing from Group D alive.
#ARG have lost by 3+ goals in a #WorldCup first round group game for just the second time in their history.

On the night though, it was a defeat that will have to be filed under ‘humiliating’ for Argentina. There’s no shame in losing to an excellent Croatian side, but the performance of Messi and Co was poor, to put it mildly.
Of course, the tone for the night was set as early as the national anthems. Messi’s reaction caught everyone’s attention and it turned out to foreshadowing akin to what we see in Game of Thrones. The sign of an impending disaster.

When the first goal came in the second half, thanks to an almighty error by the goalkeeper Caballero, it was all too predictable that the Messi pre-match image would go viral.
Did You Know: You have won as many games at the 2018 #WorldCup as Messi has. Maybe you’re the real GOAT.

Love how Messi looks as disappointed during the anthem as he does after his team is down 0-3

What #ARG have (minus Messi):
— Hassan Cheema (@mediagag) June 21, 2018
- 2 of the 10 best strikers in the world
- the best head coach in international football this decade
- CBs who start for City & Roma
- half a dozen other players who wouldnt be out of place in a CL semi
What #ARG do:
- Wait for Messi to do something

The G.O.A.T debate had to come up, obviously.
I’m just saying, based on current form, if you had to pick Ronaldo or Messi to play for your country for the rest of the World Cup, and you picked Messi...

You would be just lying to yourself...
Forget the past, forget club level. Right now, Ronaldo is better.
Messi is the best footballer in Argentina and Barcelona

Ronaldo is the best footballer in the world 😂
This World Cup is making Christiano Ronaldo look more like GOAT and Messi look more like he was made great by possibly the greatest club side/midfield of all time.

There was, expectedly, plenty of praise for Croatia.
I see so much of "Argentina are bad" - but you can't take anything away from Croatia here today. They've played fantastic so far this WC. #WorldCup

FT: #ARG 0-3 #CRO. I despair watching this Argentina side. Setup, XI, style awful. I just can’t. What a waste. Spare no praise for Croatia, though. Modric and Rakitic running the show, Rebic on form. Mandzukic’s showing should be a concern though. #WorldCup
