South Korea defeating Germany to condemn the reigning champions to their worst World Cup since 1938 was a result that would have hardly found any takers before the competition started. What was even more astonishing was that the four-time champions crashed out on a whimper, finishing bottom of the group.
Germany’s opponents united on social media to poke fun at Die Maanschaft. There were plenty who took potshots as Joachim Low’s side slumped to a new low.
They also attracted criticism for their style of play, passing the ball neatly at the edge of the box with little end product.
Of course, some good folk were quick to remind the world that Manchester City winger Leroy Sane was dropped despite having a fine season for the English champions.
As much as it hurts to bow out this early, congratulations to #SWE and #MEX. We wish you good luck in the knockouts 👏 pic.twitter.com/6gbNpePRTm

Gary Lineker’s philosophy on German efficiency took a little bit of polishing:
Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans no longer always win. Previous version is confined to history.

Bloody hell. That’s the quickest German exit from Russian soil since 1945. #KORGER #WorldCup

Germany are out the World Cup and deservedly so! One of their biggest mistakes was not including Leroy Sané. His pace and ability to create for himself and others is exactly what was missing from the Germans. #WorldCup #Germany

You can always go out early with a bad team, but not with a team like this one!! @DFB_Team
