For many, the first half of the England vs Belgium was just about as dull as the group stage of the 2018 World Cup ever got.
The ball would make it’s way to the box, it would then be cleared and then the same moves would play out in reverse. At one point, the Belgian fans were cheering yellow cards. With both teams having qualified for the knockouts before the game began, it wasn’t the marquee occasion most thought it could be when the draws were announced. Half-time couldn’t come soon enough.
But then the second half started and Adnan Januzaj came up with a wonderful goal. He cut in from the left and sent a curling finishing into the top corner. The crowd at the stadium cheered. The Belgium players got onto a pile. It was a moment worthy of celebration.
But on Twitter, the real run started after Michy Batshuayi picked up the ball and while trying to blast it into the net, he hit the post and the ball rebounded onto his own face while celebrating it.
Here’s a collection of the best responses, including Batshuayi’s own:

Good goal to be fair. Seeing Michy Batshuayi kick the ball into his own face off the post immediately after it was even better. #Eng #Bel

Given that this match didn't matter all that much, it was almost worth it for belgium to score, just so we could see Michy Batshuayi boot the ball in his own face #ENGBEL https://t.co/1Ak0Vojz3i
