IPL 2021, CSK vs RR as it happened: Moeen, Jadeja bowl CSK to a big 45-run win over RR
All the live updates from the 12th game of IPL 2021
That’s all for today folks, join us again tomorrow.
CSK skipper MS Dhoni: I always look at what’s the best at that point of time. I felt Sam bowled really well and Deepak I think he tried the knuckle ball too much and felt that a good start (with the ball) was important. It was spinning a bit, I don’t really mind Jos playing the reverse where it’s turning a bit. It’s important to have that sixth bowler, it always helps and it was stopping a bit for spinners. There was slightly less dew than the usual. I felt we should have scored more and try to get as many as possible. The first six balls I played could have cost us in another game...
RR skipper Sanju Samson: I thought it was a good score to chase down but we lost too many wickets in the middle overs. Our bowlers bowled really well, they batted too deep. 10-15 runs extra we gave down the line. We never expected that (turn), the dew didn’t come and the ball was still turning, so it was a bit shocking to see.
Moeen (3/7), Sam Curran (2/24) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/28) were all brilliant with the ball for CSK. Dhoni’s team moves into second place on the points table.
RR 143/9 after 20 overs: CSK win and they win easily. The RR chase never really got off the ground. The 45-run win will do wonders for CSK’s NRR and will give them a huge confidence boost going forward.
RR 143/9 after 19.2 overs: WICKET! Jadeja snaps up his fourth catch of the evening. Once again, he was in the right place and he did not make a mistake. Thakur gets the wicket and Unadkat (24 off 17) is walking back to the dressing room.
RR 137/8 after 19 overs: WICKET! Tewatia (20 off 15) perishes after hitting a few big shots. Bravo gets his first wicket.
RR 122/7 after 18 overs: RR need 67 runs off 12 balls. Unadkat hitting a few good shots in the Curran over.
RR 109/7 after 17 overs: Tewatia trying a few big shots but nothing working for him. CSK all the way.
RR 105/7 after 16 overs: Pretty much game over but we have time for a strategic timeout. Can RR reduce the margin of defeat?
RR 95/7 after 14.3 overs: WICKET! Moeen-Jadeja combo strikes again. Morris hits it straight to Jadeja off Morris. Moeen currently has bowling figures of 1.3-0-1-3!!!
RR 95/6 after 14.1 overs: WICKET! Moeen gets another wicket. Parag find Jadeja in the deep and Moeen has another.
RR 95/5 after 14 overs: RR need 94 runs from 36 balls to win and all their best batsmen are back in the dugout.
RR 92/5 after 12.5 overs: WICKET! RR are collapsing here. Three wickets in the last five runs. Moeen sends back Miller, who opted not to take the review. Perhaps he should have... it looked like it might have hit him outside the line of the off-stump.
RR 90/4 after 12 overs: WICKET! Jadeja strikes again. This time, he has sent back Dube (17 off 20). RR took the review but it didn’t help. Impact was umpire’s call but the umpire had already given him out.
RR 87/3 after 11.3 overs: WICKET! Jadeja knocks back Buttler’s middle stump with a beauty. It gripped and turned. The RR opener made 49 off 35 balls. CSK have the edge now.
RR 87/2 after 11 overs: 4 wides in the over and RR still made just 6 off it. Solid bowling by Bravo.
RR 81/2 after 10 overs: It looked like it would be a good over for CSK but then Jadeja bowled a no-ball off the second last ball. Buttler hit the no-ball for a six and then got another single off the free hit. 11 runs from the over. RR need 108 runs in 60 balls.
RR 70/2 after 9 overs: Two fours for Dube in the Thakur over. The first one came through point off a widish delivery and the second was a delightful lofted straight drive.
RR 60/2 after 8 overs: Buttler (39 off 26) is doing well here. He has got his eye in and if someone can stay with him, RR will be in a good space.
RR 49/2 after 7 overs: Dube will take some time to get settled in but this is a big opportunity for him to make a valuable contribution for his team.
RR 45/2 after 5.5 overs: WICKET! Samson (1 off 5) falls to the slower delivery. It hit high on the bat and Bravo took an easy catch. The RR skipper has to find ways to give himself more time in the middle.
RR 43/1 after 5 overs: Just not Chahar’s day today. Another expensive over. 13 runs off it. He has conceded 32 runs in his 3 overs so far. Another big six for Buttler in the over.
RR 30/1 after 3.5 overs: WICKET! Short ball, fielder in the deep for the pull and Vohra (14 off 11) hit it straight to him. Curran gets the wicket, Jadeja the catch.
RR 22/0 after 3 overs: Eight runs off the Chahar over. Buttler and Vohra still haven’t truly opened their shoulders.
RR 14/0 after 2 overs: A chance, if one can call it that. Buttler hit that in the air towards third man but he didn’t get too much height on it. Shardul jumped up and got one hand to it but could not hold on. Just three runs from the Curran over.
RR 11/0 after 1 over: Buttler and Vohra gets a boundary each in the first over. Not too much swing for Chahar. Good start for RR.
Players are back on the field. There is some dew on the outfield. Do CSK have enough? Can RR chase this down?
CSK 188/9 after 20 overs: And Bravo (20 runs off 8 balls) finishes it off with a six. 61 runs in the last 5 overs for CSK. They lost wickets but the runs kept coming. This feels like a competitive total.
CSK 180/9 after 19.4 overs: RUN OUT! Another run out. Bravo missed a yorker, it went through to the keeper and when he looked up Shardul Thakur was at the striker’s end.
CSK 174/8 after 19.1 overs: RUN OUT! Curran (13 off 6) is run out off the first ball. He dug the yorker from Mustafizur out and then looked for a second run was caught out of his crease by a good throw from the bowler.
CSK 173/7 after 19 overs: 15 runs off Morris over. CSK have kept losing wicket but they have kept the run-rate up too.
CSK 163/7 after 18.3 overs: WICKET! The short ball gets Jadeja (8 off 7). He went for the hook shot but only got an edge through to the keeper. Wicket for Morris.
CSK 158/6 after 18 overs: Despite the wicket, CSK make it a good over. 15 runs off it. Sam Curran has come in and made an instant impact (11 off 4).
CSK 147/6 after 17.2 overs: WICKET! The Sakarya slower ball gets Dhoni (18 off 17). No timing and it goes nowhere. The CSK skipper got the first ball away for a four but Sakariya changed the angle and the pace for the second ball. It did the trick.
CSK 143/5 after 17 overs: Dhoni gets a four but he is struggling to pick the off-pace deliveries from Morris.
CSK 133/5 after 16 overs: RR have pulled this back a bit. In the last 4 overs, CSK have scored just 21 runs.
CSK 127/5 after 15 overs: Good tight over by Tewatia. Just what RR needed. Just two runs off it.
CSK 123/5 after 13.5 overs: WICKET! Raina (18 off 15) gone too. Two quick wickets for RR and CSK in a bit of a hole now. Sakariya the bowler again! Dhoni, finally, walks in to bat.
CSK 123/4 after 13.2 overs: WICKET! Sakariya gets the wicket. Rayudu (27 off 17) went for the big shot but found Parag on the cover boundary. Parag’s third catch of the innings.
CSK 120/3 after 13 overs: An edged four off the last ball makes it a decent over for CSK and spoils what could have been a good over for Unadkat and RR. Commentators think this might be a 180-190 wicket.
CSK 112/3 after 12 overs: 14 runs off the over. Another good one for CSK. Rayudu is bringing out the big shots. Two sixes off Tewatia show that he has got his eye in already. 30 runs off the last two overs. Pressure on RR now.
CSK 98/3 after 11 overs: 16 runs from Parag’s first over. One six each for Rayudu and Raina – superb strikes both. Good stuff and the right kind of intent for the Chennai team.
After the first half of their innings, CSK are 82-3. Where will they end up?
CSK 78/3 after 9.2 overs: WICKET! Tewatia gets an important wicket. Moeen (26 off 20) doesn’t hit the googly as well as he would have liked, came off the bottom of the bat and finds Parag in the deep.
CSK 77/2 after 9 overs: 11 runs from the over. CSK are going along at around 8.5 an over. Moeen’s edge is helping him along. CSK won’t mind this. Frankly, no one will.
CSK 66/2 after 8 overs: CSK keep the runs coming through Moeen (21 off 15*), who has found his touch today. Raina is going to be getting quite a few short balls and that is on his mind already. Will be interesting to see how he deals with it.
CSK 59/2 after 7 overs: Moeen Ali comes to the party. First, an edge flew to the boundary and then he smacked one beyond the boundary. Picked the slower ball there. 13 runs off the over – a good one for CSK.
End of the Powerplay and CSK have got to 46/2, thanks largely to that one big over against Unadkat.
CSK 45/2 after 5.4 overs: WICKET! Du Plessis (33 off 17) goes for a big shot, comes down the pitch and only finds Parag in the deep. Chris Morris gets the wicket.
CSK 44/1 after 5 overs: Back-to-back four over the short fine leg for du Plessis. Played the scoop shot to get the runs. It forced a change of field. And then, he went aggressively down the ground to get a six and then followed it up with another lofted shot down the ground for a four. Really good batting this. CSK needed this over. 19 runs off the over!
CSK 25/1 after 3.5 overs: WICKET! Gaikwad finds the fielder, Mustafizur gets the wicket thanks to a slower ball. Didn’t get the timing right and it flew straight to Shivam Dube.
CSK 22/0 after 3 overs: One four for Gaikwad in the Unadkat over which yielded 8 runs for CSK. Steady stuff.
CSK 14/0 after 2 overs: Du Plessis smashes a six off the last ball from Sakaria to make it a decent over for CSK. He stepped down the track and surprised the pacer.
CSK 5/0 after 1 over: Gaikwad was dropped off the first ball from Unadkat by Tewatia, in the slips. The fielder got one hand onto it but couldn’t hold onto it. Lucky save. Good over by Unadkat to start things off.
Players taking the field. We are minutes away from the start.
