The West Bengal Police arrested a man who allegedly organised the gherao of judicial officers in the Malda district on April 1. The man, Moffakkerul Islam, is a lawyer from the Itahar area in Uttar Dinajpur district.

Islam was intercepted at Bagdogra airport while allegedly attempting to leave the state, said the North Bengal inspector general of police. The official said that 35 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

A group of persons protesting against the alleged mass deletion of voters during the revision of electoral rolls held hostage seven judicial officers, including three women, for several hours on April 1. A United States government report said that the Indian government has subjected several American companies to an “increasing number of takedown requests” since 2021 in matters that appear “politically motivated”. Titled the 2026 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers, the report said that India’s Information Technology rules impose several requirements that US stakeholders have identified as “concerning”.

It noted that the rules “impose personal criminal liability on individual employees in cases where a firm is not in compliance with the rules”. The regulations also lead to the imposition of impractical compliance deadlines and take-down protocols, the document added. Read on.


The Rajasthan High Court has deleted portions of its remarks that were seen as critical of the 2026 Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Amendment Bill. The bench said that these views were neither necessary nor intended and had been added “by mistake”.

In the epilogue of a judgement on March 30, the High Court said that the amendment bill removed the right to self-perceived gender identity guaranteed under the 2019 Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act.

The deleted portions also include one paragraph that spoke about gender identity being recognised as an “inviolable aspect of personhood” by the Supreme Court and the amendment law reducing it to a “contingent, state-mediated entitlement”. Read on.

The Aam Aadmi Party stated that it was focusing on “serious” national problems plaguing the country, rather than the “soft” matters discussed by MP Raghav Chadha. This came after Chadha, who was removed as AAP’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, alleged that the party was “silencing” him.

“For a long time, you have failed to raise matters questioning the prime minister or the Bharatiya Janata Party government,” said the party’s Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj in a social media video addressed to Chadha. “How will you remain in politics if you are scared?”

His party colleague and former Chief Minister Atishi also questioned Chadha for not protesting against the BJP. “Are you scared of BJP and Narendra Modi that you don’t question them?” she asked Read on.
