Justice Yashwant Varma, who is facing an inquiry into an unaccounted cash row, has resigned from the Allahabad High Court. He submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday.

This came as the process to impeach him was underway. The Union government was awaiting the report of a three-member committee set up under the 1968 Judges Inquiry Act by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on August 12.

The Congress questioned the Narendra Modi government’s “U-turn” on implementing the law on women’s reservation in Parliament. The prime minister had “changed his mind” on the timeline for the quota due to fears of defeat in the ongoing Assembly elections, claimed party MP Jairam Ramesh.

The implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which provides for 33% women’s reservation in Parliament and state Assemblies, was earlier linked to delimitation, pushing its proposed enforcement to 2034. However, on Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved a draft amendment bill to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816 and reserve 273 of them for women. Read on.


The Telangana High Court granted transit anticipatory bail for one week to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a forgery and criminal conspiracy case registered by the Assam Police. The bench said he could “file an application before the concerned court” within the week.

Khera had sought protection from arrest after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife filed a first information report against him. This came after Khera claimed that he had documentary evidence that showed that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds passports of the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. Read on.


The proposed amendments to the Information Technology Rules will formally bring X’s Community Notes under the remit of government regulation when they deal with news and current affairs, according to The Hindustan Times. This will allow the government to seek the removal of the user-generated fact-checking notes that challenge official claims.

Community notes on X are shaped by several users rather than being written by any one individual. The proposed change comes against the backdrop of community notes being added to many posts by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and ministers.

Civil society groups have raised concerns about the draft amendments, saying that they give sweeping powers to the Union government. Read on.
