Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was detained by the Delhi Police during a protest outside the prime minister’s house, his party claimed. The Leader of Opposition was staging a sit-in at the site, demanding the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a day after police action against the Cockroach Janta Party-led protest in Delhi.

The Congress claimed that the Delhi Police arrived outside the prime minister's residence to clear the sit-in and detained several party workers.

Earlier, the Opposition demanded a discussion in Parliament on the police’s lathi-charge on protesters during demonstration on Monday. The Cockroach Janta Party alleged that the Delhi Police had fired pellet guns at the protesters. However, the police refuted the claim and alleged that the protesters had “resorted to large-scale violence”.

Protesters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar have been demanding Pradhan’s resignation for the alleged mismanagement of competitive examinations, including the undergraduate National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, which had to be cancelled and conducted afresh after allegations of paper leaks.

On Tuesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told reporters that Modi had called for the “strictest punishment” for those involved in the paper leak during a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance.

Modi also stated that the Union government has taken steps to prevent paper leaks in the future, Rijiju said. Read on.

The Mumbai Police registered three cases against more than 50 protesters after a Cockroach Janta Party solidarity demonstration at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar. The police said the protest was held without permission and that restrictions on public gatherings were in force.

The cases were registered at Mahim and Shivaji Park police stations. Several people, including students, were detained during the protest.

Hundreds of farmers from Punjab were stopped at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana while trying to enter Delhi for a Kisan Mahapanchayat against the proposed India-United States trade deal. The day-long gathering was scheduled to be held at Kisan Ghat in Delhi on Tuesday.

However, the authorities in Bharatiya Janata Party-led Haryana placed concrete barricades and cement blocks at the border, following which protesters staged a sit-in.

Farmer groups have opposed the trade deal saying cheaper agricultural imports could adversely affect farmers, labourers and small businesses. They have demanded that the deal be “completely scrapped”. Read on.

India on Tuesday summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires to convey its “grave concerns” about an attack on a cargo ship near Ukraine’s Odesa port that killed four Indians and left one critically injured. New Delhi emphasised that “such attacks undermine the safety, security and stability” of international maritime commerce.

The Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel Golden Leo was attacked on Sunday while leaving the port. The five Indians were among the 17 crew members on board.

At least 10 workers were killed in the collapse of a tunnel being constructed in Sikkim’s Namchi district. Around 27 workers were trapped after a landslide blocked the tunnel entrance.

The tunnel is part of the Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project.

Rescue operations were hampered by a suspected gas leak inside the tunnel, with some rescuers reportedly feeling dizzy and losing consciousness. The gas is believed to be leaking from underground strata or rock formations disturbed by the landslide. Read on.
