Delhi Uber driver sentenced to life imprisonment for raping female passenger
The court also asked for the convict's family to be rehabilitated and given some compensation due to their poor financial status.
A district court in Delhi sentenced Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav to life imprisonment for raping a 25-year-old female passenger in the city in December last year. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 21,000 on the 33-year-old, which shall go to the victim by way of compensation. It also asked for Yadav's family to be rehabilitated and given some compensation due to their poor financial status.
On October 20, Yadav had been convicted of rape, causing grievous bodily harm and for endangering the life of the woman. He had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The incident had stirred outrage across the country and renewed a fervent debate on the lack of safety for women in public spaces in the capital. It prompted the Delhi government to ban Uber and several other web-based taxi companies from operating in the city, for failing to carry out adequate background checks on drivers. Uber has since apologised for the incident and attempted to improve its security features.
