Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said that the decision to hand over the case of captured gangster Chhota Rajan to the Central Bureau of Investigation was taken after consulting with the Mumbai Police. He also dismissed claims that some Mumbai Police officers were on the payroll of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, an aide-turned-rival of Rajan.

Fadnavis said that the Mumbai Police would assist the CBI in getting information from Rajan on the cases registered in the city, adding that requisite arrangements had been made in for his incarceration if he were to be moved.

The 55-year-old gangster, who hails from Mumbai and faces over 70 criminal charges, was arrested by the Indonesian police in Bali on October 25. After the Maharashtra government decided to hand over his dossier to the CBI on the eve of his deportation to India on November 6, reports began to surface that Rajan had spoken of a nexus between Mumbai Police officials and Ibrahim, the main accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
