New Delhi: Supreme Court denied Bharti anticipatory bail on Monday

Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti, wanted in a domestic violence case, surrendered to the Delhi police late on Monday. The Supreme Court had, earlier in the day, refused him anticipatory bail and asked him to surrender by Monday evening. "There was a warrant, and today the Supreme Court directed me to surrender. So here I am," said Bharti, former law minister of Delhi. The apex court added that the matter would be heard again on October 1.

Himachal Pradesh: Virbhadra seeks FIR copy

A Delhi court on Monday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to file its reply on Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh's plea seeking a copy of the FIR filed against him and others in a disproportionate assets case. CBI conducted searches at his Delhi and Shimla residences on Saturday.

Tamil Nadu: Jaya announces mobile phone scheme

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced ascheme to give mobile phones to 20,000 trainers of self-help groups in Tamil Nadu. It will involve an expenditure of Rs 15 crore by the state exchequer. The self-help groups manage records pertaining to conducting meetings, payment, savings and loans. “A special mobile application will be designed to ensure registration of details and to monitor the functioning of each group,” Jayalalithaa said.

Assam: Boat with 200 passengers capsizes

An overcrowded mechanised boat carrying nearly 200 people capsized on Monday in River Kolohi, Assam. The vessel was carrying passengers to a boat race in Kamrup district when the engine stopped working and the boat hit a bridge and overturned, Kamrup (rural) deputy commissioner Vinod Kumar Seshan said. The number of casualties was not confirmed, he said.

Maharashtra: Probe into policewomen beating girl

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday ordered an inquiry into the assault of a woman devoteeby women police personnel at the popular Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh pandal in Mumbai, after a video of the incident went viral. The incident took place on Friday when the girl was stopped after she tried to gain entry into the pandal through a gate meant for VIPs. The 29-second-long video footage shows that when the girl was in the middle of an argument with the security staff, a policewoman slapped her. Other colleagues also beat the girl.
