Maharashtra to challenge Bombay High Court order, seek ban on Maggi again
The state government will move the Supreme Court against an order by the High Court allowing the noodle brand to resume sales.
The Maharashtra government on Thursday decided to move the Supreme Court against a Bombay High Court order allowing Nestle India to restart sales of Maggi noodles. India Today reported that the Centre has backed the move. On November 4, Nestle India said that its Maggi noodles were safe for consumption, after 100% samples from its newly manufactured stocks were cleared by authorised laboratories.
The snack was banned in June after tests reportedly found the lead content in it to be beyond permissible limits. The Bombay High Court court had set aside a ban on the product by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and asked for new tests, saying the food labs that had tested the samples were not authorised. The court had said Nestle India could re-launch the product if the results were clean. After the noodles brand passed the tests in three government-accredited laboratories in October, it was declared safe to re-enter the market.
