35 killed in Andhra Pradesh as rain continues to lash southern states
Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu has sought a relief package of Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre.
At least 35 people have been killed in rain-related mishaps, especially wall collapses, all over Andhra Pradesh in the past week. The districts of Chittoor, Nellore, Kadapa and Anantapur in particular, suffered the most, with low-lying villages getting submerged and crops being damaged, the total loss being estimated at Rs 3,000 crore. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu asked his ministers to supervise relief measures, and told officials to dispatch essential commodities to the worst-hit villages. He also asked the Centre to dispatch Rs 1,000 crore for rehabilitation work, reported NDTV.
The Indian Meteorological department predicted heavy rain in parts of South India over the weekend, with Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep facing the brunt it. The recent stage of the north-east monsoon has wreaked havoc in the southern states, especially Tamil Nadu where at least 111 killed and thousands displaced because of the deluge.
