The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a public interest litigation seeking the Central Bureau of Investigation to register a case against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for allegedly declaring himself a British citizen. An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu said that the petition filed was frivolous, reported PTI. The bench added that it was for the Election Commission to look into whether Gandhi has violated election law. It also questioned the "authenticity of the document" and how the papers were procured.

On November 17, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy had alleged that Gandhi had declared himself a British national to start a company in the United Kingdom. The Congress had refuted the allegations by producing a certificate of incorporation of the company that mentioned his nationality as Indian.
