Indian Super League: Chennai inch closer to semi-finals after thrashing Mumbai 3-0
As the downpour in their city continued, Chennai attacked with ferocity to rise to fourth place in the league.
Amid heavy rain the the city, Chennaiyin FC showed fine fettle to dispatch Mumbai City FC 3-0 on Tuesday's Indian Super League game, pushing their way towards a place in the semi-finals.
The game kicked off 15 minutes late because of the weather conditions, but it continued to pour through the match, with puddles forming on every side of the field. The tournament's highest scorer, John Stiven Mendoza scored his 11th goal of the season to give the home team the lead within the first ten minutes. In the 17th minute, the sluggish outfield helped Chennai as the ball stopped on its way towards the Mumbai keeper. Jeje Lalpekhlua was the first to react and put it away to double Chennai's lead. The final goal in the game came just before half-time as a delightful pass from Thoi Singh found Bernard Mendy right in front of the goal, the Frenchman finishing with a flourish.
The second half was much less exciting as Chennai preferred to defend their lead. Mumbai's miserable season got worse, but Chennai went home smiling. With this win, they are now in fourth place with 19 points and in with a good chance to clinch the fourth semi-final spot.
