Hockey World League: India defeats Great Britain in sensational quarter-final
The hosts secured their first victory against the opposition in 35 years thanks to goals from VR Raghunath and Talwinder Singh.
India secured a famous and unlikely victory over Great Britain in the quarter-final of the Hockey World League in a scintillating thriller at Raipur. The final scoreline read 2-1 and in many ways, it was a historic victory – the last time India had defeated GB was back in 1980 in the Champions Trophy.
Great Britain came into the quarter-final as favourites, having topped Pool A. On the other hand, India had finished bottom of Pool B with only one point. However, India began attacking from the start and it paid off as VR Raghunath made no mistake from a penalty corner in the 19th minute. This buoyed the home team, who pressed forward. Great Britain looked far more subdued and failed to get it past India's goalkeeper Sreejesh on the few occasions they got a chances.
Talwinder Singh scored a brilliant goal to put India further in front and bring the noisy crowd to its feet. However, things became tense in the last quarter as India's Rupinder Pal Singh got a green card, after which Great Britain's Simon Mantell got a goal back for the away team in the 52nd minute. A tense scramble continued in the last few minutes as Britain very nearly scored from a last-gasp penalty corner only for Sreejesh to deny them and grant India a famous victory.
