Governor of Yemeni city Aden killed by Islamic State militants
Aden had been functioning as the de-facto capital since rebels took over Sana'a earlier in the year.
The governor of the seaport Aden in Yemen was killed along with five bodyguards by a car bomb on Sunday morning. Agence France-Presse reported that Islamic State militants claimed the attack on Jaafar Mohammed Saad. The militant group is involved in an ongoing civil war in Yemen. Houthi rebels in North Yemen have seized much of the country, including Sanaa, the capital.
BBC reported that Major General Saad was appointed governor after playing a pivotal role in recapturing Aden from Houthi rebels earlier in the year. Aden has been the de-facto capital since Sana'a was taken over by rebels. United Nations reports say more than 5,700 people have been killed in Yemen because of violence and air strikes.
