Indian shooter Heena Sidhu books Olympics spot after winning gold at Asian qualifiers
The world record holder scored 199.4 points in the finals of the 10m air pistol event after beating her Iranian and Singaporean opponents.
India’s top shooter Heena Sidhu secured a spot at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Wednesday after winning the gold medal in the 10m air pistol event at the Asia Olympic Qualifiers. A former World No 1 and current world record holder, Sidhu led the qualifying round and topped the eight-shooter finals to ease into the Olympics.
Sidhu scored 387 on the qualifying charts and chalked up 199.4 in the finals, where her odds got a boost as four of the eight competitors had exhausted their share of Olympics quotas. Competing against Iran’s Golnoush Sebghatollahi and Elham Harijani and Singapore’s Xiu Hong Sidhu started the finals with a hiccup. She was placed in second position for the first shots before some near perfect shootings put her into the lead. From then on, she consolidated and made three 10s in her last four shots.
“I couldn’t have done anything more today. I am extremely satisfied that it has happened,” she said, according to Hindustan Times.
