Jammu & Kashmir governor wants PDP and BJP to end deadlock, decide on coalition by tomorrow
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti had earlier said she will decide on forming a government only after she is convinced that the BJP wants to help the state's troubled population, and not just secure power.
Jammu and Kashmir governor NN Vohra on Monday asked the Peoples Democratic Party and Bharatiya Janata Party to sort out their differences on the issue of government formation, reported Hindustan Times. Vohra has written to both Mehbooba and state BJP chief Sat Pal Sharma, and called them for separate meetings on Tuesday at the Raj Bhavan in Jammu. Vohra wants them to decide on forming the government by Tuesday.
After meeting senior leaders on Sunday, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti had said that she will decide on forming government in the state only after she is “convinced” that an alliance with the BJP will bring the people of J&K peace after decades of trouble. According to her, her father Mohammad Mufti Sayeed had taken an "unpopular" decision to align with the BJP hoping they would bring prosperity to the state, but they did not. She has also asked for a written assurance from the BJP about implementing the common minimum programme, which defines the objectives of a coalition, in letter and spirit. However, the saffron party rejected her demand and said that "they will not give any written assurance since it is not necessary", reported the Times of India.
The PDP has authorised Mehbooba to take a call on government formation, after her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died earlier this month. Its legislators will meet again on Monday to discuss the issue.
